As we drive through the park, I imagine the townspeople gathering here for a flea market or July 4th fireworks, perhaps a Memorial Day concert. Blankets spread across the grass, coolers anchoring them in place. A few pop-up gazebos shade the elderly and the babies. Kids dart between chatting parents. In a town like this, the Bud Light and Corona flow freely. It’s a rowdy day but a relaxing one, and on the way home, the kids will be fast asleep in the backseat, adults quiet and content in the front.

Later I learn that Pioneer Park really is used for some of these events. One of the biggest events of the year in Zolfo Springs is Pioneer Park Days which runs 3-4 days and draws tens of thousands of people to this little central Florida town.

By many standards, Pioneer Park isn’t very big, but it’s clearly an anchoring presence and keeps the history of Zolfo Springs alive. The town sits about 40 miles east of Bradenton, more village than town, the Peace River flowing leisurely along its northern boundary. Pioneer Park, located at the corner of State Road 64 and Highway 17 is the town’s #1 attraction.

Peace River

We stumbled upon Zolfo Springs accidentally-on-purpose. Though we were looking for the town, we thought we’d find springs there to cool off in, maybe somewhere to eat lunch, a park surrounding the springs. We found none of those but did find an interesting piece of Florida history.

Historic Spring at Zolfo Springs’ Pioneer Park

A book written in 1929, History of Hardee County, says “The springs, strongly sulphur, contain medicinal properties and a large flow of this pure, cold water flows into a swimming pool, which is the delight of hundreds every year. The springs are easily reached and are but a couple of hundred yards from the Dixie Highway. The place is used as a picnicking ground by groups from this and adjoining counties.”

Further research revealed the spring was more or less concreted over in the 1960s and the pool left to be overgrown. The historic spring is thought to have been a third magnitude spring, spilling about 10 cubic feet per second into the Peace River ⅓ mile away. Like many other springs in this part of Florida, it’s possible Zolfo has dried up, in large part due to a lowered water table in our aquifer which doesn’t create the necessary pressure to cause the springs to flow. Dried up or not, Zolfo Springs is no longer flowing, and though the area is available to the public, there is little to see except the dry spring run.

Things to Do at Pioneer Park in Zolfo Springs

In Pioneer Park, we found a shady spot by the boat ramp and parked. I pocketed my phone and slung my camera’s backpack across my shoulders. The boat ramp angled down awkwardly towards the river. When we climbed to the edge of the bank, we saw why. The river was low, really low. I later found out it’s about 39 inches below normal, and at this time of year before the daily rains hit, normal is pretty low anyways.

We walked east along the river on a meandering path that led down to the exposed riverbed. Water still flowed in the middle but for the most part the river ran dry. The banks rose six to seven feet, limestone worn smooth and pockmarked. Trees clung to the edge.

Ahead of us a family of four ambled along as they cast lines into the water, reeled in, cast again. We headed back up the bank and walked on, this time along a sand trail with offshoots back to the river. We passed another group, these carrying shovels and floating sifters. Fossil Hunters. The Peace River is popular with them and low water levels signal the best time to go hunting.

The lake separates the campground from the river.

The spit of land we were on separates the river from a lake which fronts the campground. Even in May’s warmer weather, the campground was half full. The sites appear to have water and electricity. There are bathrooms and a playground nearby. Large oaks shade the campsites. And, of course, there’s the view.

Our last stop while exploring Pioneer Park in Zolfo Springs was the Cracker Trail Museum and historic buildings. Sadly, the museum was closed, but it was still interesting to see the buildings, the old locomotive and field sprinkler, and read the laminated articles on the outside of the Hart Cabin and Post Office. For a town as small as Zolfo Springs, Pioneer Park is an exceptionally lovely place. It’s worth the drive to spend an afternoon here, and if camping is your thing, the rates are remarkably affordable.
